GP 28: A poem inspired by the vibrant Gauteng Province

A poem inspired by the vibrant Gauteng Province:

"Eyes of Love"

In Gauteng's embrace, where sunbeams kiss the dawn,
A mustard seed on South Africa's map, yet vast in spirit,
Eleven languages weave a tapestry of unity,
Color-blind hearts, seeing through the eyes of love.

The morning sun, bright as our collective future,
Paints hope across the horizon, igniting dreams,
And in this bustling province, where hustle meets passion,
We navigate life's traffic, weaving purpose into existence.

Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream echoes here:
"Black children and white children will play together,"
And so we do—beyond race, tribe, and prejudice,
For Gauteng's beauty lies in shared laughter and kinship.

Yet shadows linger—the oil's slippery hands,
Seeping into the ocean, staining seabirds black,
A reminder that our actions ripple through nature,
The sacred mingling with the profane, life entwined.

As the sea breeze whispers tales of decay,
We must give back, mend the broken strands,
For Gauteng's heart beats in every language spoken,
And love, like the sun, rises anew each day.

Let us be the poets of this province,
Crafting verses of resilience, hope, and grace,
Where the mustard seed blooms into a garden,
And we see not colors, but the light of love's embrace¹².

A Carnival of Colour: Die Kaapse Klopse and Cape Town’s Tweede Nuwejaar Introduction Few spectacles in Cape Town capture the city’s layered history, music and sheer joy like Die Kaapse Klopse — the Cape Minstrels. Every January the Mother City fills with the bright uniforms, parasols and ghoema rhythms of thousands of performers who parade, compete and celebrate Tweede Nuwejaar (Second New Year). For visitors this is more than a show: it’s a living tradition that links the present to a past of resilience and creative survival. --- Origins and Early History The roots of the Kaapse Klopse reach back to the colonial era when enslaved and marginalised communities in the Cape were given a single day off after New Year’s Day. On that day they sang, danced and paraded in the streets — an act that became a yearly assertion of identity and community. Over decades these spontaneous celebrations coalesced into organised troupes or klopse, each with ...
