KZN 19: The Comrades Marathon: A Legendary Test of Endurance in KwaZulu-Natal

The Comrades Marathon: A Journey Through Time, Hills, and Camaraderie

**Introduction**

🏃‍♂️Comrades Marathon 2026 & 2027: Answer the Call of the Ultimate Human Race
📅 8 June 2026 – Up Run (Durban ➝ Pietermaritzburg)
📅 13 June 2027 – Down Run (Pietermaritzburg ➝ Durban)
Every year, thousands of athletes from across the globe gather in South Africa for a race that is not just run — it is experienced. The Comrades Marathon, known worldwide as The Ultimate Human Race, invites you to test your endurance, spirit, and purpose on one of the most legendary ultramarathon routes on Earth.

🌍 A Legacy That Began in 1921
The Comrades Marathon was founded by Vic Clapham, a World War I veteran who wanted to honour fallen soldiers and celebrate human endurance. What began as a small race with just 34 runners has grown into the world’s largest and oldest ultramarathon, attracting over 20,000 participants annually.
From its inception, the race has alternated direction each year:
The Up Run: Durban ➝ Pietermaritzburg
The Down Run: Pietermaritzburg ➝ Durban
This alternating format ensures that no two consecutive races are ever the same — each presents its own unique physical and mental challenges.
⛰️ Up Run vs Down Run: What’s the Difference?
🔺 The Up Run (2026)
Starts in Durban (coastal city)
Finishes in Pietermaritzburg (inland capital)
Characterised by long, relentless climbs
Distance: ±87–90 km
Considered the more grueling test of strength
🔻 The Down Run (2027)
Starts in Pietermaritzburg
Finishes in Durban
Features steep descents that punish the legs
Faster, but equally brutal due to impact
👉 The 2026 race will be an UP RUN
📍 Iconic Landmarks: Polly Shortts (“Poly Shots”)
One of the most famous sections of the race is Polly Shortts, often misheard as “Poly Shots.”
Located near Pietermaritzburg
A steep, punishing climb (or descent in Down Run)
Known for breaking runners — physically and mentally
Conquering Polly Shortts is a badge of honour among Comrades runners.
🕒 Race Day: Start, Duration & Cut-Off
Typical Start Time: Around 05:30 AM
Maximum Race Time: 12 hours
Final Cut-Off: 17:30 PM
There are multiple cut-off points along the route, and runners must maintain a steady pace to stay within limits.

📣 The Invitation
On 8 June 2026, the road rises from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. It will test you. It will challenge you. It will change you.
And in 2027, the road will reverse — offering a completely different battle.
The question is not whether Comrades is ready for you.
The question is: are you ready for Comrades?
👉 Enter the race. Embrace the journey. Become a Comrades finisher.

For visitors this is more than a show: it’s a living tradition that links the present to a past of resilience and creative survival. --- Origins and Early History The roots of the Kaapse Klopse reach back to the colonial era when enslaved and marginalised communities in the Cape were given a single day off after New Year’s Day. On that day they sang, danced and paraded in the streets — an act that became a yearly assertion of identity and community. Over decades these spontaneous celebrations coalesced into organised troupes or klopse, each with ...
